Personality:
While Sasha is often described as simple by her superiors and peers, this is not actually the case. This impression stems from her initial appearances during military training, where she was carefree about her job and focused merely on the merits of being in the military. After eating a potato during initiation and being punished to run for hours, her only regret was that she hadn’t tried all the food available yet, and this shows just how little she thought of others and the overall situation. The only impression others get is that she isn’t horrified of having to run for so long, only that she has to skip dinner. While one of her primary motivations may have been something as silly as being able to eat whatever she wanted, there’s a more serious reason as well. Sasha does care for her family and her home, along with the hunting traditions they uphold. Before leaving for the military she ignorantly tells her father that people should just keep their hands off their lands, despite those people having no where else to go. Her father he calls her ‘stupid’ because she carelessly eats food from their winter storage, without considering how difficult it might make things for them later. She doesn’t want her family to change by befriending others for aid and support, but after the fall of Wall Maria it’s impossible to keep going as they have been. This isn’t a motivation she talks about, and definitely gets overlooked at the start because of what she portrays as her attitude.
Shadis even considers her as quick and capable, but is unable to work with others due to her eccentricity. She steals a kill from Jean and Connie and laughs about it, telling them that she’d been tailing them both from above. During hand to hand combat she just plays around too, pulling ridiculous poses with Connie. She jokes around, mocking and teasing Jean about his ‘roundabout love confessions’ to Eren. She steals from their superiors, not caring about the consequences. When Ymir and Christa have to help her get back to her bed, Ymir takes advantage of her carefree attitude to get Sasha to do chores for Christa. Sasha just laughs it off and actually agrees to help. All of this goes straight back to Sasha not taking their duty seriously. As time goes on, Sasha does begin to see her new friends as a motivation for trying harder. At Trost she runs to save Samuel so he won’t fall off the wall and she agrees to help with Armin’s plan to get rid of the titans roaming in the supplies storage. She offers to share the meat she stole from superiors to everyone, rather than just eating it by herself. Her attitude towards befriending others has definitely improved, and after three years with her training squad, they have helped her start to see some of the imperfections within herself as well.
It takes Sasha a reasonable amount of time to actually start to face her imperfections and to push herself, but she definitely makes an effort the more she spends time with the others. This is especially the case after the invasion of Trost, and after she almost loses her life. Mikasa, in particular, inspires confidence in Sasha to allow herself to go back to her hunting traditions. She doesn’t see that mentality in a bad light anymore because of the other girl’s strength, and instead it pushes Sasha to work harder. Previously, Sasha had not hunted in a group, and her methods reflect this. In this sense her impression of herself is that she is someone who is socially awkward and unable perform in front of others because she thinks she will be judged for it, just like she had judged people from outside her village before getting to know them. Now, she is more aware that no one considers that side of her to be strange, in fact, it’s actually an asset that can potentially keep everyone safe.
As ridiculous as it seems, it is also because Sasha was so carefree in the past that she’s capable of growing into a person whom others can rely on. She uses her ability to joke around in times of dire need to try and put a smile on other people’s faces. She tries to be a distraction. She’s also able to hop onto a good mood to encourage others when they are unable to see their own capabilities; in fact, she aids Eren in boosting Marco’s confidence by agreeing and saying he would make a great leader when he puts himself down. Not only that, but when everyone thinks they’re going to die, she offers support to motivate everyone back into action. For example, on the rooftops in Trost she tells everyone to get up, she smiles and tells them that they can do it, they just need to get into the building for gas. She’s still scared, but she recognises that it’s an all or nothing situation, if they stay there they definitely will all die. At least if they get to the building they have a chance of making it back over the wall. In a sense, despite her pushing others to get up and carry on, she doesn’t actually see it as intentionally helping others and only sees her actions as those of desperation. There’s no way that on her own she would be able to fight through the masses of titans gathered there. Yet, others perceive her words as a sign of strength because she is capable of gaining positive a reaction out of others who previously gave into their fears. This differs from her own view of herself that tries to avoid joining the fray if possible, such as when she claims to have a stomach ache and asks to be counted amongst the wounded..
She begins to truly understand the gravity of the situation after her first battle against titans. Fear is a powerful motivator, and this is definitely the case for Sasha. On the first excursion with the Survey Corps, she gives into fear again. As part of the relaying squad it’s her duty to send flare signals, but she panics and drops hers, and then runs off course to try and stay alive, kept in line only because the rest of her squad were there with her. Sasha does need the guidance at this stage, as thinking of others is still a relatively new thing for her. When she is almost eaten by a titan in the supplies building she cries and begs the titan for mercy, forgetting that it doesn’t even understand human communication in her panic. In the end, Mikasa has to save her, and this helps her begin to understand that she can’t continue all on her own like she had done before in training. They all need to work together.
Considering her situation, it’s understandable that one of her biggest fears is losing friends or family. In Trost they all lost Thomas, Marco, Mina etc., and watching those friends die was a horrifying situation; yet, this is also something nearly every soldier that has gone to battle and survived has witnessed. She has to grow and adapt to survive.
Fear and helplessness is often a theme when it comes to battle for Sasha, but she also learns to suppress that and use it to her advantage too. This is especially the case for instances where her knowledge of hunting is necessary, such as when the female titan screeches out a distress signal and she recognises it as such. If she had been consumed with fear, it’s possible that such knowledge may have gone over her head. This technique isn’t necessarily an ability to completely understandable an animal, but a useful tool to understand any dangers she may face when it comes to hunting. She’s very in tune with her surroundings. For example, when she rests her head on a table, she’s able to hear heavy footsteps of titans in the distance as this only occurs outside the norm of everyday life.
Ironically, in the past her fear had been for other people to get involved with her family and change them, yet after joining the military police she changes the way she speaks to others to hide her upbringing. While she doesn’t necessarily put on a facade, she does act extra bubbly and upbeat so people overlook or don’t make assumptions where she’s from and the kind of life she came from. In a sense it’s not only to hide her embarrassment, but to protect her family from judgement. At this point she still felt wary of other people, which is why she considers even doing this to begin with. This is nonsensical as people would rather her be herself (Ymir chastises herself for not speaking normally, and Christa asks her to say what she feels like saying whenever she thinks of something) than put on an act. Another instance where Sasha is shown to face embarrassment towards herself is when she fails to take down the titan in the supplies storage building. She tells Connie that she can’t look at anyone and thinks everyone hates her, which isn’t the case at all. She still has a very jaded view of people at this point, but everyone else’s reactions (they don’t mind that she and Connie failed, they back them up and offer encouragement) help instill confidence in her.
Due to recent events in the canon, Sasha's lighthearted personality has become more subdued. While she still jokes around and smiles about things, she's become comfortable enough to let more of herself to shine through and doesn’t seem to be as concerned with hiding her upbringing or identity. She even admits to Connie that while she’d like to visit her home village, she was told to not go back until she was a decent human being. Another example of this is her hunting traditions: when Jean and Armin pretend to be Eren and Christa to bait someone, she shoots a man’s hand as he reaches for a knife and yells to Mikasa to never take her eyes off the prey. In this instance, she not only protects Mikasa from injury, but also shows that when she is more like herself she is an incredibly capable fighter, and someone that people can depend on.
When Sasha heads home to check on the status of the village after a “breach” in Wall Rose, she truly becomes a strong and reliable person -- someone that her father can say he’s proud of. Despite still feeling that familiar fear, Sasha doesn't give into it and instead manages to hold her own against a titan. On her own, she decides to try and save someone trapped in a house with only an ax as her weapon. She even manages to save a child and fight off a titan with only a bow and arrows and even grapples the titan to escape. Overall she’s grown enough that she’s managed to combine the skills she’s learned from her home life and her new ways of being in a military force in a squad with others to her advantage.
In this kind of situation it's difficult to be lighthearted, and even when they find out about their freedom from the Military Police hunting them down, minutes after she's back to being completely serious as Eren's life hangs in the balance. The important thing to note here is that while in the past she may have joked around with Connie or others while they are being given orders she now stands still and listens to every word Hange says. Since her return home she's grown even further and has become much more like a soldier than her previous efforts ever showed. She fights with less hesitation now.
This is also because of her trust in those she has become used to over the years or even months. Hange and Levi in particular are very strong leaders who have proven themselves over and over to be worthy to the cause of protecting the public from harm, as well as their teams from titans. In fact, the fact that she has shown to dislike their current mission (or at least looked uncomfortable enough to know they had to fight humans now) she listens to them anyway. Yes, both have lost squad members over time, but Sasha is aware that they both do their best to protect those under their care. Not listening and fucking around in the background wouldn't be conductive. Not to mention that the 104th squad went through three full years of training together, went through the horrors of Trost together and stuck together and joined the Survey Corps at the same time. She holds a great trust in them, as they now do with her. She's proven herself more than once now--first by returning with news about her village, and also with the Reeves' Company incident where she watched everyone's backs while they staged the ambush. Sasha has definitely become dependable in times of crisis.
In terms of the tone and how she deals with the new war they are faced with, Sasha is rather silent on the issue. She hasn't said anything against it due to her orders, so we can only rely on her facial expressions that show discomfort or uncertainty to back this up. That, and if you consider that has been snappier and quieter it all concludes that she puts her duty above her own feelings. While trainees are given hand to hand combat training, most never expect to use it. Here, we are given proof that it has been possible all along that they've been fighting the wrong enemy and that is difficult to digest.
This doesn't mean she can't have fun and joke around. When it's calm, such as when Levi's new squad were first holed up in the cottage, she made dinner with the others and had fun. Not only this but when they were waiting for orders before the so-called breach of Wall Rose she was casually talking to the others without a care in the world. Her conversation then was also rather serious, mind you, as it was concerning her status with her family rather than something dumb like eating a potato in the middle of recruitment or saying that Jean was giving Eren a love confession..
Personality Changes:
Abilities:
x Hunting: Sasha is a capable hunter. Her family has always been hunters and have passed on the knowledge to their children for ages. She is able to track down animals and people alike. She can use her senses (sight, hearing, smell especially) to her advantage.
x Stealth: As Sasha has proven her ability to steal from the storage of their superiors without getting caught, despite officers keeping a tight watch on the distribution of supplies due to the food shortages, this shows how capable she is at sneaking around to get what she wants. The only reason why it’s known in the end is because she can’t resist eating her stolen goods in plain sight.
x 3DMG: Sasha graduated in the top ten of her training squad, showing her capabilities in taking down titans using the 3DMG of her world. The 3DMG gives the user the capability to climb walls, swing through forestry. It uses the entire body for movements and only someone with elite training can use it properly.
x “Parkour”: Given that she’s been trained to use the 3DMG, along with this comes the ability to run up steep walls. There are instances when they have to jump rooftops that are many meters apart and all of those who graduated are capable of this feat.
x Weaponry: With the 3DMG is a twin sword set that Sasha is capable of using. Along with this she is also trained to use a bow and arrow and can shoot someone’s hand from a considerable distance. She can also use a bow and arrow while moving. On top of this there is also other traditional hunting weaponry such as a hunting knife.
x Physical Capabilities: As someone who trained to join the army Sasha is quick and strong. She’s gone through training to aid her in battle, including hand to hand combat. She may have not taken a lot of it to heart at the time and is definitely not one of the best students but she does grapple a titan to get free. She’s quick on her feet and is capable of performing moves such as flips and twists in the air.
x Medical: While her full capabilities with this are unknown she has been shown stitching up one of Levi’s wounds in the manga. With this it’s safe to say that she has the basics down, but nothing too difficult.
